Salt-laden air is the one real specification difference on this coast, and it is the reason cheap grounds fail here in three or four years rather than fifteen. Within a few kilometres of the shore, plain painted mild steel corrodes at the welds and fixings long before the play value is used up. We specify hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated sections, stainless fasteners, and roto-moulded LLDPE for decks, slides and panels wherever the design allows — LLDPE simply does not rust.

The second coastal factor is water. Dakshina Kannada takes one of the heaviest monsoons in the country, so what sits under the play area matters as much as what sits on it. EPDM is permeable but the base below it is not forgiving — it has to be laid to fall onto a free-draining sub-base, or the ground holds water and the surfacing debonds. On sites with poor natural drainage we price the sub-base honestly rather than laying surfacing over a problem.

Mangaluru has a dense mix of CBSE, ICSE and state-board schools with a long institutional tradition, and campuses here are generally willing to specify properly the first time. That suits us: we would rather quote galvanised steel and a correct sub-base than re-quote the same ground in four years.
