An Activity Room, Not a Laboratory

No board requires a primary school to build a science laboratory. CBSE specifies laboratories from secondary level; ICSE and the Karnataka State Board do the same. So the right purchase for Classes 1–5 is not a scaled-down senior lab with benches, gas points and a fume hood — it is a science activity area stocked with equipment that thirty children can pick up, pass round and put back.

That changes three things about the specification. Quantities are counted in groups of four to six, not pairs. Materials are unbreakable wherever a glass equivalent exists. And the hazardous half of a school lab — open flames, concentrated reagents, mains-voltage circuits — is simply not bought at all.

The lists below cover the four strands primary science is usually organised around, plus the measurement equipment every strand borrows from. Prices are indicative bands for budget approval, not quotations.

Measurement and Observation Equipment

Measuring is the first real scientific skill a primary child learns, and it is borrowed by every other topic. Quantities assume a class of 30 working in groups of five or six.

Room, Furniture and Storage

Group tables beat fixed benches at this age: they can be rearranged for project work, they seat six for shared kits, and they cost a fraction of a plumbed laboratory bench. One wet position at the teacher’s table is usually all the plumbing the room needs.

Safety Rules That Shape the List

  • No open flames at student positions. Anything that needs heat is done at the teacher’s table on a controlled warming plate.
  • No concentrated chemicals. Solutions are limited to household-safe substances; there is no reagent shelf in a primary room.
  • No mains-voltage work. Circuit kits run on cells, and sockets in the room are at adult height with a switched, protected circuit.
  • Unbreakable first. Polypropylene beakers, jars and funnels replace glass; lenses are shatterproof; specimen jars are sealed.
  • Teacher-issued items. Glass slides, tweezers, scissors and the microscope live in a lockable cupboard and are handed out for the activity, not stored open.
  • Visible first aid. A stocked first-aid box, an eye-wash bottle and an extinguisher, mounted where an adult reaches them in seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do primary schools need a science laboratory?

No board requires a separate laboratory at primary level. CBSE affiliation norms specify laboratories from secondary level onwards. What primary and elementary schools need instead is a science activity area: a corner of the classroom for Classes 1-2 and a shared activity room for Classes 3-5, stocked with handled equipment children can use themselves. Building a full lab at this stage spends money on benches and fume extraction that five-year-olds will never use.

What science lab equipment do elementary schools need?

Five groups. Measurement: plastic beakers and measuring jars, pan balances, spring balances, rulers and tapes, sand timers and thermometers. Living world: hand lenses, a junior microscope for demonstration, prepared slides, germination trays, a junior torso model, charts and specimen jars. Matter and materials: magnet sets, compasses, simple circuit kits, solubility and filtration sets, floating and sinking apparatus. Force, light and sound: pulleys and levers, simple machines, inclined planes, ray boxes with mirrors, and a sound kit. Earth and sky: a solar system model and a junior weather station.

How much does primary school science equipment cost?

As indicative bands: a classroom science corner for Classes 1-2 is about Rs. 40,000 to 70,000; a shared science activity room for Classes 3-5 with furniture, kits and storage is about Rs. 70,000 to 1.5 lakh. Moving up to a middle-school science room for Classes 6-8, with class-set glassware and student microscopes, is Rs. 1.5 to 4 lakh. Figures include equipment, activity furniture and storage, and exclude civil work.

How many sets of each item does a class of 30 need?

Primary science works in groups of four to six rather than pairs, so six to eight sets of most kits covers a class of 30 with everyone handling equipment. Items used individually - hand lenses, rulers, plotting compasses - are stocked at 15 or more. Demonstration items such as the microscope, the solar system model and the weather station are supplied as ones.

Is the equipment safe for young children?

That is the main constraint on this list. Primary equipment is specified unbreakable where possible - polypropylene beakers and jars instead of glass, shatterproof lenses, sealed specimen jars. There are no open flames at student positions, no concentrated acids or bases, and no mains-voltage work: circuits run on cells at 1.5 to 6 V. Anything with a glass or sharp component is stored in the lockable cupboard and issued by the teacher.

Can the activity room be used for other subjects?

Yes, and most schools plan it that way. Group tables with laminate tops and mobile storage make the same room usable for art, craft and project work, with the science kits living in labelled trays inside the cupboards. A single wet position at the teacher's table is usually enough plumbing for the whole room.

Do you supply to CBSE, ICSE and State Board primary sections?

Yes. Equipment lists are built from the environmental science and science syllabus of the board you follow - CBSE, ICSE, Karnataka State Board, IB PYP or Cambridge Primary - and quoted line by line with GST invoicing for trust or management approval.
